Our Top Ten Places in and Around Bristol to Relax in Nature

When the sun graces Bristol, there's nothing quite like escaping the urban hustle for a slice of verdant tranquillity. Whether you're seeking wild swimming spots, lush green spaces, or unexpected pockets of wilderness, Bristol and its surrounds offer a treasure trove of natural sanctuaries. Here's my list of top ten places where you can truly unwind this Summer. They offer solitude for solo days but equally cater for families looking for green spaces to stretch out.

 In no particular order:

The Wave

This inland surf lagoon might seem an unconventional choice for nature-based relaxation, but hear us out. The Wave offers a unique blend of aquatic adventure and landscaped tranquillity. Surrounded by meadow planting and native grasses, the venue creates an unexpected oasis where you can lounge on the sun-drenched terraces, watch surfers carve crystalline waves, or simply paddle in the shallows. The adjoining sauna and wellness facilities make it perfect for those seeking a holistic escape without venturing far from the city centre. It's holiday vibes without the airport queue.

Wiper and True, Old Market

Tucked behind the brewery in Old Market, this hidden gem boasts a sun-trap beer garden that feels worlds away from the surrounding industrial architecture. Mature trees provide dappled shade, whilst wooden benches and wild planting create an unexpectedly bucolic atmosphere. Pair a craft beer with the ambient sounds of rustling leaves, and you've got the perfect afternoon sortie. They have cultivated a genuine sense of escapism here—proof that nature can flourish in the most urban of settings.

Chew Valley Lake

Just a short drive from Bristol's boundaries, Chew Valley Lake presents a vast expanse of shimmering water framed by Somerset's rolling hills. This reservoir attracts birdwatchers, sailors, and those simply seeking contemplative waterside moments. The circumference walk offers ever-changing vistas, whilst the gentle lapping of waves against the shore provides a meditative soundtrack. Pack a picnic from local producers, find a quiet spot along the shore, and let the expansive sky work its restorative magic. It's the quintessential English countryside escape. Theres also a very good chippy onsite if you forget the picnic!

Westbury Wildlife Park

A little known space to those living outside of BS9, Westbury Wildlife Park is a little haven and feels a million miles away from the city. A community space to help preserve and protect local flora and fauna. A centre to educate and create. A therapeutic natural environment. A place to feel safe. The park offers a rosta of wellbeing workshops, yoga classes, Fire & Ice Sauna is tucked under a canopy of trees (the pretty dipping pool used to house seels in its former life as a zoo) or you can just find a quiet corner and read a book whilst listening to the birds. A lovely little onsite cafe is also the perfect place to replenish.

Windmill Hill City Farm

This community-run urban farm embodies Bristol's commitment to accessible green spaces. Goats, pigs, and chickens potter about their enclosures whilst volunteers tend vegetable plots bursting with seasonal produce. The farm café serves wholesome fare, perfect for refuelling after a wander through the grounds. There's something profoundly grounding about encountering agricultural life within city limits. It's unpretentious, heartwarming, and utterly rejuvenating.

Old Sneyd Park

This leafy enclave in North Bristol feels like stumbling upon a secret garden. Ancient woodlands give way to open meadows where wildflowers flourish in summertime, creating a tapestry of colour and scent. The paths meander gently, inviting aimless wandering—the very antithesis of purposeful city navigation. Dappled sunlight filters through the canopy, and the only sounds are birdsong and the occasional rustle of wildlife in the undergrowth. It's a place where time seems to slow, offering genuine respite for the overstimulated mind. My kids also love a trip to the pond to feed the many ducks that settle here over summer.

Badocks Wood

Badocks Wood presents a properly wild pocket of ancient woodland in Southmead. The terrain undulates pleasantly, with babbling brooks cutting through the landscape and creating natural soundscapes that drown out urban noise. During summer, the canopy provides welcome shade, whilst clearings offer sun-drenched spots for spreading a blanket. Dog walkers, families, and solo wanderers all find their rhythm here. From Badocks Wood you can continue on down to Westbury Village or visit Westbury Wildlife Park. It's also right next door to Henleaze swimming lake (sadly it has a 4000 person waiting list).

Snuff Mills

Following the River Frome through a wooded gorge, Snuff Mills delivers dramatic natural scenery that belies its urban postcode. The riverside path winds past weirs and pools where, on particularly warm days, you might spot intrepid wild swimmers braving the bracing waters. Moss-covered stones and overhanging branches create an almost mystical atmosphere, whilst picnic spots dot the route.

Beeses Boat Cruise

Glide past wooded banks and under historic bridges. Watching the city from this aquatic perspective offers fresh appreciation for Bristol's relationship with its waterways. Disembark at the traditional pub for refreshments, completing a quintessentially British afternoon of leisurely escapism. From April until October you can take a boat from the city centre on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday to this infamous spot along the river Frome. Beeses has a rosta of live music most weekends throughout the summer and can get very busy on the warmer days.

Abbots Pool

Nestled in Leigh Woods, Abbots Pool rewards those willing to venture slightly off the beaten track. This serene body of water, surrounded by dense woodland, attracts a devoted following of wild swimmers during warmer months. Even if you're not inclined to take the plunge, the poolside offers contemplative spaces for quiet reflection. The light plays beautifully on the water's surface, creating an ever-changing natural artwork. It's raw, unsanitised nature—gloriously imperfect and thoroughly restorative.
